Local roots, global results: Celebrating 4 years of Startup Haus Cairo

“Individually we are one drop; but together we are an ocean.” – Ryunosoke Satoro.

In 2018, enpact and DROSOS FOUNDATION jointly established the Startup Haus Cairo as a physical space for entrepreneurs and creatives in the heart of Cairo. Since then, it has grown into a vibrant, diverse community of entrepreneurs, empowered with a global network and on-ground resources. Through various support programs, events, activities and partnerships, Startup Haus Cairo takes part in driving the Egyptian startup scene forward and promoting entrepreneurship across the region.

The learnings from Startup Haus Cairo has been an essential part of our blueprint for providing support programs throughout Egypt, and the foundation to replicate the model in other countries and ecosystems. Together with DROSOS FOUNDATION, we continue to provide support for those who are rolling up their sleeves and doing the work to change the world.

In this publication, enpact and DROSOS FOUNDATION offer a comprehensive look into the journey of building a support infrastructure and community, with a look into the history, process, milestones, challenges and learnings. The goal is presenting a case study that can be adapted to other ecosystems, collaborations and contexts.

Aside from being a retrospective report on the journey and learnings of Startup Haus Cairo, the publication also features an overview of Cairo’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and the steps of building a support space such as Startup Haus Cairo from the ground up – both as a physical location and a support infrastructure upon which a community can be built and opportunities can be provided to entrepreneurs and creatives in the country.

We also look at the impact of Startup Haus Cairo from five key metrics:

  • Raising awareness
  • Creating jobs
  • Economic empowerment
  • Lifelong learning
  • Policy advice

The publication also features entrepreneurship and cultural hubs in Egypt such as KMT House and Nahdet el Mahrousa’s El Garage, and entrepreneurial initiative that are geared towards reducing economic inequalities such as Helm Foundation and Nawaya Rural Heritage Initiative Project.

Lastly, we dive into recommendations and best practices for similar support spaces for entrepreneurs and creatives.
